A 62-year-old man has been detained by the Police Judiciária (PJ) after investigators linked him to six separate arson incidents on Santa Cruz das Flores, on the Azores island of Flores. Between 25 July and 24 September, the fire was reported six times in different locations across Santa Cruz das Flores. PJ says the man is strongly suspected of committing six arson crimes. Police say the fires did not all target the same type of property. One blaze was set in an attached garage next to a home. Another fire reached a motor vehicle. The other four incidents occurred in structures used for agricultural support activities. Investigators believe the flames were started using homemade incendiary devices, though PJ did not reveal the devices' characteristics or how they were prepared. PJ also identified a possible motivation for at least one of the events. In that case, investigators say the man allegedly acted out of feelings of revenge. The motivation behind the other five fires remains unclear, but the investigation notes they occurred in a context associated with excessive alcohol consumption, without establishing alcohol as the cause. PJ says the six fires caused significant financial damage. At least one incident also created danger for the lives and physical safety of people targeted, with local volunteer firefighters helping prevent worse consequences. The suspect is now set to be presented to a judicial authority for a first hearing and the application of any related remand measures. The investigation is led by the DIAP of the Azores, Santa Cruz das Flores section, and continues as police work to fully clarify the circumstances of each fire.
