Swede remanded in Malta to face proceedings before extradition
Court ordered custody after a European Arrest Warrant, with consent to extradition.
A 31-year-old Swedish national will remain in custody in Malta to face criminal proceedings there before being extradited to Sweden, following a European Arrest Warrant.
The court ordered the remand after the man was arrested a few days ago. The case includes multiple charges in Malta, with proceedings started on two counts linked to aggression and violent behaviour.
A request has been made to send him to Sweden. The court said the cases pending in Sweden are similar to those he must answer for in Malta, meaning he has to face the Maltese proceedings first.
The man told the court he would consent to his extradition. He said he has a wife and children in Malta and wants to return to be sentenced, adding that he had been married in Malta for three years and that investigations in Sweden had ended.
Magistrate Monica Vella said official documents showed the investigation phase in Sweden was similar to the proceedings phase in Malta, supporting the decision to handle the Maltese case first.
