A 54-year-old man was arrested after a copper theft from a machining business in Tavernole sul Mella, and police say he ran over the company owners while trying to escape. The incident happened in the early hours of Friday, 9 October. Carabinieri from the Villa Carcina station arrested the Italian man on suspicion of aggravated theft, personal injuries, and illegal possession of weapons and ammunition. Investigators allege the suspect entered the company area and stole multiple copper gutters and other metal parts. After loading the items onto his pick-up, he left the site, but ran into the two owners, aged 42 and 22, who were trying to stop the vehicle. Police say the man hit both owners with the pickup, causing injuries. The two owners were treated at the Gardone Val Trompia emergency department and discharged with 15 days of prognosis each. Carabinieri launched an identification effort after the theft report, using licence-plate readings and the company’s CCTV footage to trace the vehicle. The man was found at his home. Carabinieri then searched his home and garage, recovering stolen metal items from the Tavernole sul Mella business. They also found additional metal and copper goods, plus some new window fittings, which police are checking for possible unlawful origin. During the search, 90 rounds of 20-calibre ammunition were seized, and police said they were illegally held. A ski mask was also recovered, allegedly used to conceal the suspect’s face during the theft. After the validation hearing, the judge for preliminary investigations confirmed the arrest. The suspect is subject to an obligation to appear before the judicial police and a night-time requirement not to leave his home.
