Dozens of people are injured as police use batons, tear gas and water cannons.
Protesters stormed ministries in Tirana, Albania, set buildings on fire and clashed with police, with at least 40 people detained.
The unrest continued for more than 10 hours after demonstrations began on October 14. Protesters threw stones, bottles and pyrotechnics at government buildings, then broke into the ministries of education, justice and finance.
Witnesses reported protesters set fire to several buildings, damaged private businesses, and surrounded the prime minister’s office. Some groups also stormed shopping centers and banks.
Law enforcement officers used batons, tear gas and water cannons against the demonstrators. Protesters, civilians and police officers were among those injured. Journalists reported obstruction of their work and the confiscation of equipment.
President Bajram Begaj called for dialogue, while the EU delegation demanded an investigation into reports of excessive use of force by police.
Police are holding at least 40 people following the detentions, and the situation in central Tirana remained tense as explosions and sirens could be heard.
