Venice police arrest 22-year-old after cocaine seizure and resistance
The suspect faces drug and assault charges after alleged escape attempt near Rialto.
Venice police arrested a 22-year-old for alleged cocaine possession for drug dealing, resistance to officers, and injuries to a public official.
During a targeted operation against street drug dealing in Venice’s historic centre, officers from the San Marco Police Station spotted the young man near the Ponte di Rialto. When they approached, he allegedly tried to flee through the crowd, pushing multiple citizens and tourists.
Officers caught up with him and say he then ingested some ovules, putting his own life and the safety of the police at risk. During efforts to stop him, officers were allegedly bitten on their fingers.
Health services were called and the 118 emergency medical service carried out care and checks. The suspect was then taken to the Questura of Venice for further controls.
After checks, he was found to be an illegal presence in Italy and was also carrying several grams of cocaine. Police placed him under arrest for the crimes alleged in the investigation and handed him over to the judicial authority.
At a court hearing, the arrest was validated and a precautionary measure was issued, ordering a ban on staying in the City of Venice. The court also gave a nulla osta to his expulsion. He was transferred to the Gradisca di Isonzo Immigrant Removal Centre while further paperwork for removal from the national territory is carried out.
The criminal case is still ongoing, and guilt will be determined by final judgment.
