Vienna police seize 107 pyrotechnic items after Halloween incidents
Officers detained eight suspects in connection with alleged resistance and damage.
Vienna police stepped up patrols across the city for Halloween, and the preliminary results now show 107 pyrotechnic items were seized.
Between 31 October 2026 and 1 November 2026, several hundred officers in uniform and plain clothes were deployed at heavily frequented locations. Police said most administrative and criminal actions were linked to alleged misuse of pyrotechnics.
In total, police issued 509 reports, including 28 for criminal offences and 391 for administrative offences. Eight suspects were taken into custody on a provisional basis for alleged resistance and suspected property damage, while two people were provisionally detained under administrative law.
One incident happened in Vienna-Meidling. Around 21:50, an unmanned police vehicle parked there was damaged by unknown offenders using a flammable liquid. During an immediate manhunt, officers stopped two men, a 16-year-old and a 19-year-old, and placed both in provisional custody. Prosecutors in Vienna ordered that they be released on bail.
Officers also seized 107 pyrotechnic objects during the wider operation. Police said the deployment and consistent intervention helped ensure there were no major security-relevant incidents, and that reported demonstrations in central Vienna on the previous day were calm from the police perspective.
