Greek police bust suspected migrant smuggling network with Athens safehouses
Raids in Vyronas and central Athens led to 1 arrest and 21 illegal residents found.
Greek police dismantled a suspected network smuggling foreign nationals, mainly from China, into Greece via Albania, using Athens safehouses.
After coordinated raids in the eastern Athens suburb of Vyronas and central Athens, officers arrested a 39-year-old man accused of running temporary accommodation and helping migrants illegally enter, stay, and exit the country.
Police said four apartments in the same Vyronas building were used as short-term safehouses. Inside, officers found 21 foreign nationals aged 22 to 58 with no required documents to remain in Greece. The arrested man is accused of overseeing the apartments and arranging the next stage of travel.
Greek authorities said the operation had been running since at least late July. Migrants allegedly flew from China to Albania, then crossed the Greek-Albanian border on foot through remote, unguarded areas. Once in Greece, they were transported by car or bus to the Vyronas apartments, where they waited while organizers set up onward travel to other EU countries.
Police also alleged the network produced and supplied forged travel and identification documents, including passports, residence permits, and identity cards of questionable authenticity. The documents were reportedly used to leave Greece and travel to Italy and Spain. The fee charged for a full illegal transport and relocation package ranged from 6,500 to 7,000 euros per person.
During searches of the man’s residence and the four apartments, officers seized passports, residence permits, and identity documents of dubious authenticity, 10 boarding-pass stubs, photocopies of airline tickets, small quantities of narcotics, a large number of keys, three surveillance cameras, counterfeit clothing items, 28 mobile phones, and a vehicle allegedly used by the group.
The 39-year-old was charged with participation in a criminal organization, forgery, facilitating illegal entry and exit, illegal possession of travel documents, and immigration and narcotics law violations. The 21 people found in the apartments face charges of illegal residence and were brought before the competent prosecutor.
