Police in Pardubice accused activist of terrorism after arson case
Court has extended his pre-trial detention twice while investigation continues.
A man accused of terrorism has spoken out from custody in connection with an arson attack in Pardubice that prosecutors say targeted LPP Holding’s plant.
Police accuse Youssef Moursi, a 25-year-old student, of involvement in the burning of the Pardubice arm of LPP Holding. The incident happened more than half a year ago, but the case remains unresolved, and Moursi’s pre-trial detention has been extended twice, with reviews every three months.
Moursi told Al Jazeera that investigators are using “psychological warfare” and said it was “unacceptable” to keep people in custody and extend detention based on “a mix of sympathies, activism and racism,” without direct evidence. In his account, he initially spent three months in solitary confinement, and later received a looser regime, including up to one hour outside his cell daily and permission to call every day for a maximum of 20 minutes.
The police case is tied to an arson attack that caused damage in the hundreds of millions. A group calling itself The Earthquake Faction later claimed responsibility and released a video from the attack, naming the target as cooperation involving Israeli firm Elbit Systems. Moursi and the others are accused in connection with the fire.
The investigation’s evidence includes, among other things, information that Moursi allegedly shared after the attack, advising activists on how to behave if approached by police. His defence, represented by lawyer Pavel Čižinský, argues the case is built on “ridiculous” evidence.
The latest status described in the report is that Moursi remains in custody as the investigation continues and the court continues to review his detention every three months.
