Slovenian Police say officers are taking part in Rail Action Week, an international prevention campaign organised by Railpol, the European association of police organisations responsible for policing railways across Europe. The campaign takes place from September 21 to 27, 2026. Police will work alongside representatives of Slovenian Railways with the aim of improving safety both on board trains and at level crossings. During the coming days, the focus will be on several types of risky behaviour. Officers and rail representatives will look at unsafe actions at railway level crossings, including how vehicles and pedestrians cross railway lines. They will also concentrate on risky behaviour on board. Police added that part of the week’s activities will be used to raise awareness among young people about railway safety. The campaign materials stress the danger of attempting to cross ahead of a train, warning that a train’s braking distance can extend to several hundred metres. Police also highlighted the risks of crossing tracks where there is no designated crossing. They said trains can take several hundred metres to stop after hitting a vehicle, and the danger increases in poor visibility conditions. Drivers were advised that when stopping before a crossing in such conditions, opening windows can help them hear an approaching train even if they cannot see it. Police said reckless behaviour at level crossings is a major factor in railway accidents, particularly when combined with reduced visibility caused by weather. They noted that accidents can occur even at crossings equipped with warning lights and barriers, and said drivers should not cross when barriers are not fully raised or when warning lights are flashing. The police message is to obey traffic signs and cross railway tracks safely only where and when it is permitted.
