IDB finishes probe into Zemgale police officers’ alleged misconduct
Investigation files were sent for prosecution over inaction, forged documents and information leaks.
The Internal Security Bureau (IDB) has finished investigations into alleged criminal offences by three State Police officials from the Zemgale Regional Board and one private person, and has sent the files to the service investigation prosecutor’s office for criminal proceedings.
IDB completed probes in three separate criminal cases. In the first stage, the agency says several Zemgale State Police officials were detained in the second half of January 2026 on suspicion of inaction and official document forgery agreed in advance.
In August 2026, prosecutors received a case against a State Police official for alleged inaction and for alleged offences under the Criminal Law related to the same conduct. IDB says investigators gathered evidence that the official wanted another State Police officer to gain an undue benefit. That officer, IDB says, was allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol and caused a road traffic accident. The targeted official, according to IDB, failed to carry out alcohol concentration testing and did not take explanations from witnesses, which allegedly blocked efforts to establish the accident’s circumstances.
IDB also says investigators established that the same State Police official allegedly falsified a service document by stating that responsibility for the traffic rule breach belonged to another, unidentified person who had left the scene, helping the officer avoid liability for causing the accident.
Around the same time, prosecutors received two more cases. One was against another Zemgale State Police official over alleged unlawful disclosure of non-classified information. The second was against a different official for allegedly instigating disclosure of non-classified information.
IDB says in those cases investigators found that the official connected to the accident allegedly urged an officer handling the related administrative offence file to disclose information from the case materials.
In early October 2026, prosecutors were also sent a case against a private person for allegedly giving knowingly false testimony. IDB says the private person, being aware of the circumstances of the State Police officer’s road traffic accident, gave allegedly false statements in an administrative offence matter and in the criminal process.
IDB notes the offence was discovered in close cooperation with State Police.
