Police seized almost €2 million in cash from a seafood company near Naples as part of an investigation into alleged tax fraud and money laundering in the wholesale fish trade, according to ANSA. The Guardia di Finanza found the money concealed around cold stores, in office furniture and inside a changing-room locker at premises in Mugnano di Napoli. The searches, which began on 14 October, recovered €2.19 million in cash overall. Prosecutors are investigating 14 individuals and legal entities over alleged false invoicing worth €87 million. They allege shell companies were used to evade VAT on wholesale sales of salmon, tuna, sea bass and sea bream, allowing fish to be sold below prices charged by businesses that pay tax. Investigators also claim the scheme involved false accounts used to obtain state-guaranteed bank loans. Illicit proceeds, prosecutors allege, were then reinvested in businesses and property. Under a seizure order worth €17.6 million, police seized 70 properties, 11 plots of land, vehicles, luxury watches and gold jewellery. The fish was reportedly bought mainly from operators in Sweden, Spain and Greece. The investigation remains at a preliminary stage, and those involved are presumed innocent unless convicted.
