Family convicted over attempt to invade GNR post in Torres Novas
A 35-year-old man received six months in effective prison for threats.
A family tried to invade a Guarda Nacional Republicana (GNR) post in Torres Novas, and the case has ended in convictions, including an effective jail term.
The incident dates back to 1 August 2022. After the GNR was alerted to an abandoned vehicle in Sentieiras, Barroca, the soldiers moved the car for safety and seized items found inside, including a young man’s wallet with personal documents.
Around 20:35, the 28-year-old went to the post with his parents and others. Outside, the parents shouted at the soldiers. The commanding sergeant ordered everyone inside and to ignore the provocations.
The father, 58, allegedly confronted the commander, saying “I shout what I want, you clown.” When he was given a voice of detention for insults, his 56-year-old wife allegedly grabbed and violently scratched the commander, tearing his T-shirt, and clashed with other officers.
During the chaos, the younger son fled through a window. The older son, 35, then threatened one of the GNR members outside the post, saying, “When I catch you, I’ll break your neck.” The confrontation took place with dozens of people gathered nearby.
At trial in Santarém, the accused denied the facts and claimed police violence. The court relied on video surveillance and found almost all of the accusations proven. The 28-year-old was acquitted because he was not formally detained when he escaped through the window, so his flight was not treated as the crime of evasion.
The father was acquitted of resistance and causing bodily harm, but convicted of aggravated insult, receiving a 900-euro fine. The mother was acquitted of multiple offences, but convicted of resistance and coercion of a public official, receiving a one-year-and-six-month prison sentence suspended for the same period.
The older son, who had previous convictions, was convicted for aggravated threat and sentenced to six months in effective prison. The court refused to suspend the punishment because of his criminal history and because the offence was committed during the suspension period of other sentences.
The convictions are final following the court ruling, with one defendant serving effective prison time and another receiving a suspended sentence.
